CJC Pitcher, Roberts, drafted by Astros
CISCO,
Texas – Mason Roberts, right-handed pitcher for the Cisco Junior College
Wrangler baseball team, was drafted by the Houston Astros organization in the
2007 draft. As a sophomore pitcher for CJC, Roberts had 3 wins, 2 losses, and 5
saves. His ERA was 2.80. Roberts got the attention of major league scouts as a
closer but changed roles to starter by the end of the season.
“We couldn’t be more excited for Mason,” said David White, CJC baseball coach. “He was such an asset to our organization, and I’m thrilled that he has this opportunity.”
The three-year old baseball program at
CJC has made great strides. In addition to Roberts being drafted, 10 other
players signed NCAA Division I baseball scholarships this year.
Roberts pitched at a tryout for the Houston Astros earlier in the month. He was clocked pitching at speeds of 92-94 mph. The Astros drafted Roberts in the 17th round, pick number 531 overall.
Roberts hails from Martindale, Texas. He graduated with an Associate's Degree from Cisco Junior College in May 2007. He will report to the Greeneville, Tennessee Astros to play in the Rookie League by the end of the month.
Cisco Junior College is an affordable two-year institution with locations in Cisco and Abilene. The college offers a variety of academic transfer and technical programs.
