The new rate structure implemented by the US Postal Service on May 14th has some very dramatic changes that are important for our mailers to know about.  Some prices changed upward and some changed downward but the change having the most impact is the change to “shape based pricing”.  That is, the rate you pay is determined by weight AND shape of the article.  See the example below to illustrate this.

Weight          Letter          Large Envelope          Package

1-oz.           .41                     .80             1.13

2-oz.           .58                     .97             1.30

3-oz.           .75                     1.14            1.47

A “letter” has a maximum size of 6 ¼ x 11 ½ inches, ¼ inch thickness, and 3.5 ounces in weight.

A “large envelope” has a maximum size of 12 x 15 inches, ¾ inch thickness, and 13 ounces in weight.

The concept is that it costs more to process and transport large envelopes and packages than it does for letters.  The two links below are good resources for mailers.  Of course, if you have questions, give me a call
